With winter well and truly here, it’s time to organize our wardrobes for the cooler months ahead. Although winter means more layers, we can still get creative and showcase our personal style by integrating new winter fashion trends into our existing wardrobes. Inspired by my new Valentino purchase that I shared in my previous blog post [Valentino Vsling], I am deciding to embrace color this season for some much-needed fun and feel-good vibes. Today I’m sharing my 6 Winter Fashion Trends straight from the runway that are party and weather appropriate for this busy festive period.
Bright Colors and Clashing Colors
If you’re more of a traditional dresser, winter isn’t usually synonymous with color, and most probably less likely for bright colors, however, let’s explore. Wearing color during winter is one way to lift your spirit and mood, especially on those rainy stormy days. If you are new to the world of color during winter, I recommend starting by choosing your favorite color in an accessory or fashion item that is easy paired with your more neutral staples. Then as you gain confidence, you can begin introducing brighter colors and even start color blocking or wearing clashing colors! This winter I will be substituting monotonal neutral looks for color.
My favorite bright colors and clashing colors on the runway were shown at Off-White with their stunning electric blue with fun pops of bright orange, Sacai with their amazing color blocking of pink and red, Prada with fun shades of cobalt blue, Jacquemus with electrifying reds, pinks, blues and every color under the sun, and Chanel with a fun pink take on their classic jackets and purple knitwear. There were also beautiful bright colors and clashing colors at Versace, Prada and Rodarte if you’re looking for more inspiration.
Ski Wear
Whether you live in a climate where it snows or you simply love the look, Ski Wear is such a fun trend to incorporate into your winter wardrobe. Rather than the traditional knitwear and outerwear that we tend to gravitate to, to keep us warm, let’s change things up. Looking through the recent fashion week shows, I was super inspired by Etro, Dolce & Gabbana and Miu Miu’s takes on the trend. There was everything from subtle nods to the style with ski knitwear and pants, all the way through to furry boots, massive puffer jackets and even ski eyewear if you want to go all out. I think it’s a super chic trend for those times when you are travelling in the cold, are feeling particularly sporty or if you just tend to feel the cold more than most and want to rug up but still look fashionable!
Sheer Details
If you want to keep your looks a little bit sexy in the wintertime, and substitute out bulky layers, I highly recommend sheer details! Not on their own of course, layering is key with this trend, but I found some amazing examples of how to pull it off in the cooler months with the fashion week runways of Sacai, Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, and Chanel. Sheer details are perfect for the festive season, you could have a sheer dress layered underneath a warm coat (Carrie Bradshaw style) as seen at Sacai, style tulle skirts with combat boots like Christian Dior, be a little more daring like Dolce & Gabbana and brave the cold by showing a little more skin or keep it demure and more traditional a la Chanel with gorgeous sheer outer layers so you keep your outfit visible.
Mini Skirts
Do you tend to only wear pants or tights during fall and winter? While there are many fun alternatives like leather and different shapes and styles, I saw lots of luxury designers incorporating mini skirts into their cooler weather collections and I’m here for it! Alessandra Rich was one of my favorites for the trend with their incorporation of colored and patterned mini skirts paired with stockings and boots for a chic cool girl vibe. If you know you’ll be in a warm environment for your festive party, you could always rock a mini skirt sans stocking like the looks at Dolce & Gabbana, Versace and Fendi. They featured striking mini skirts styled with blazers, camisoles and even denim to suit all aesthetics. If you still need convincing, check out the mini skirts featured at Valentino, Chanel, Self-Portrait, Lanvin, Schiaparelli and Tom Ford for more inspiration.
Double Leather
Leather is definitely a winter staple, no doubt about it. However, have you ever ventured into double leather territory? Hermes is the king of leather, so I always look to their collections to see what the upcoming leather trends are going to be. I noticed they featured complete leather looks, from dresses, boots, shirts, skirts, belts, bags and more in tonal colors and I can really see myself rocking this trend this season. Along with Off-White’s gorgeous blue and orange leather looks and Givenchy’s incredible black blazer, I say let’s ditch the traditional winter wools and embrace all things leather.
All Things That Glisten
You can’t go wrong with sparkles, sequins, embellishments, glitter, and silky fabrics for the festive season. It’s the one time of the year that you can never be overdressed! Let’s move away from conservative evening looks and dare to stand out from the crowd. Some of my favorite designs for this trend were from Givenchy, Alessandra Rich, Dolce & Gabbana, and Chanel. Givenchy featured a reflective dress that looked conservative from the top but as you peered your eyes down, the dress turns into a fun gold hue finished with fringing at the bottom for even more fun. Alessandra Rich provided the trusty metallic silver and gold go-to festive gowns, Dolce & Gabbana ushered in the big pearl trend and an incredible coin dress fit for a queen, and finally Chanel provided the more subtle take on the trend with pink glistening pants and embellished dresses and jumpsuits. Other luxury designers that showcased the trend were Celine, Isabel Marant, Stella McCartney, Burberry, Loewe, Erdem, Dries Van Noten, Versace, Valentino, and Louis Vuitton if it’s a favorite that you’d like to explore more.
